Rezerwat, o powierzchni 220 hektarów, obejmuje jezioro Liwia Łuża wraz z linią brzegową. Jezioro powstało w wyniku odcięcia morskiej zatoki mierzeją, która ma szerokość od 400 m do 1200 m. Jezioro jest płytkie (średnia głębokość to ok. 0,9 m), a wokół niego ciągnie się malowniczy Szlak Liwiej Łuży. Rezerwat został stworzony pierwotnie w celu ochrony łabędzia niemego, lecz jest dziś obszarem ochrony jeziornego ekosystemu i siedlisk rzadkich roślin słonolubnych oraz ptaków. Jezioro z morzem łączy Kanał Liwka, będący naturalną granicą między Niechorzem a Pogorzelicą.
